Background
This is the second release from UK pairing Neil Fraser and vocalist Jason Morgan under the name Trishula. Back in March 2019 under their moniker Trishula they released their debut ‘Scared To Breathe’, however this is our first listen to them, and there are a lot of similarities to other British combos in recent times.
Fraser and Morgan get some assistance from Magnum‘s keyboardist Rick Benton, Demon drummer Neil Ogden, Dan Clark on bass and Georgia Morgan on backing vocals. Their bio suggests comparisons to the likes of Midnite City, Shaft Of Steel, Nitrate and Vega. So if any of those bands tickle your fancy, then you’re in luck.
The Songs
My favourites include the superb ‘I Want It All’ a Sunstorm copycat if ever there was one. The Joe Lynn Turner styled arrangement and the synth solo are winners. ‘Hear No Evil’ is another highlight, the harmonies on the chorus are particularly good. Definitely worth a repeat play. ‘The Border’ is the other moment of worth, with a symphonic element similar to Magnum which shouldn’t come as a surprise considering the Rick Benton connection (see below).
In Summary
The indelible production hand of the Magnum team via Sheena Sear in the band’s Madhat Studios adds the bells and whistles to this very melodic effort. Probably not the most original sounding band out there, but Trishula deliver a professional package nonetheless with a handful of interesting tracks. Release Date: 25 Sept 2020.
As a footnote, upon the dissolution of the bands record label AOR Heaven, Trishula released their third album in 2022 called ‘We All Fall Down’ as a self released effort.
