Background
The British band Atlas first crossed our bow back in 2017. As a new band they dabbled in a few different styles on their debut EP, but by 2018 and their first full-length album ‘In Pursuit Of Memory’ for AOR Heaven, the five piece had locked into melodic rock like a jailers key. One change though, second guitarist John Moss has since departed, and a new full-time drummer Ryan Briggs has come onboard.
The Songs
Atlas have certainly embraced their melodic rock as if born to it. The sound third time around is slightly heavier while the subject matter takes on all aspects of love, but they don’t appear to tackle the thorny and contemporary subject of social distancing..lol. A lot of care has obviously gone into the construction of these tracks, but unfortunately for me not a lot grabbed my aural senses with any stickability. Perhaps ‘We Are The Fire’ but not a lot else.
In Summary
I wasn’t that keen on the tone used throughout the guitar solos which sounded like a dentist’s drill, especially when played fast. Lead singer Craig Wells carried much of the vocal load but in this genre good vocal harmonies are essential, but here they don’t really stand out. I’m sure the band will review all the feedback once the album is in the public domain, and go from there. For those who enjoyed their prior efforts you know what to do. Release Date: 25 Sept 2020.
