Background
The Big Easy are a superb slice of Danish AOR sitting somewhere in the middle lane of Keven Jordan, Brett Walker, West Of Sunset and fellow Danes Toys Of Joy and Sko Torp.
Not a particularly well known band are The Big Easy, but the Danish connection is quite strong, with the album being produced in Medley Studios and mixed by Lars Overgaard, while another Toys Of Joys connection is made with Hans Henrik Egestorp putting in a guest appearance throughout the album.
The Songs
10 tracks on offer here, kicking off with the magnificent ‘Last Call’. This one has that same cruisy feeling evident on the aforementioned Toys Of Joy ‘One Of These Days’ Album. The chorus and vocal harmonies are so smooth.
‘Wild World’ has a real mid-west theme surging through it and for a minute I thought I was listening to Sko Torp.
My favourite tracks are the very Steve Winwood flavoured ‘Angel’ (gotta listen to that killer chorus!) while the album closer ‘Nothing’s Gonna Stop Me Now’ sounds like an outtake off an Alfie Zappacosta album and has some lovely keyboards and accoustic guitar permeating through the song.
Torben Zinckernagel’s voice takes a bit of getting used to, and is not as smooth as someone like Soren Sko, but when melded with the music, it’s a good fit.
In Summary
The Big Easy is a bit of a rarity, if you find it good luck. As a matter of interest .. I picked this up on a shopping trip in a second hand CD shop in the middle of downtown Sydney – Australia. What are the chances? Of all the places to find an album like this.
