Background

Hard working rock band Foghat had up until this point, been an industrious lot, with numerous album releases since their inception in 1972. Originally from the UK, the band found fame and fortune easier to come by with constant touring in the United States, and also settling into a long term relationship with Albert Grossman’s Bearsville record label.

Of their prior albums, most are worth having, but in particular, you can hear the excitement generated when the band play live, and this is captured on their ‘Foghat Live’ the year before (1977). The band originally came about after Dave Peverett left UK blues rockers Savoy Brown to form the band, taking along Roger Earl and bassist Tony Stevens for the ride.

The Songs

An ‘out and out’ blues band, Foghat turned up the volume and found favor with many hard rock fans with their brand of riff heavy blues. ‘Stone Blue’ was their eighth album and featured Eddie Kramer as the new producer for the band. The album achieved gold status, though could not match its predecessors ‘Foghat Live’ or ‘Fool For The City’ which went platinum.

Still, the album was a solid workout, with the title track becoming a Top 40 hit, while other tracks such as ‘High On Love’ and ‘Chevrolet’ ended up being favourites among their fan base. The band also did a cover of Robert Johnson‘s ‘Sweet Home Chicago’, keeping them in touch with their blues origins.

In Summary

The band continued well into the 90’s, though with slightly different lineups. The legacy of Foghat seems to have stalled with the untimely death of band leader Dave Peverett on Feb 7 2000. A shame, but to hear them in their prime, the mid 70’s period is where your discography should be aimed at. Classic rock at it’s best.
