Always a popular draw on this site are Canadian rockers Teaze. We look at their second LP ‘On The Loose’ released in early 1978. Their debut is reviewed here, and although it was an encouraging start, Teaze were still having problems getting their name up in lights.
However they did grab the attention of Aquarius Records (the Canadian offshoot of Capitol Records), who signed the band at the tail-end of 1977, just in time to get this LP out the door a few months later.
The Songs
Teaze had recorded a couple of Vanda and Young tunes during their career, and it continued on this album with the opener ‘Gonna Have A Good Time Tonight’ originally recorded by Aussie band The Easybeats a decade earlier. Of course, George Young and Harry Vanda come from rock royalty thanks to their AC/DC connection.
‘Stay Here’ surges into acoustic balladry but eventuates into a pleasant rocker with a chorus that captures. The solo sounds like something Molly Hatchet would do. Nice. Teaze churn things up a bit with ‘Ready To Move’, love that guitar tone, and the whole thing just kicks ass. ‘Sweet Misery’ was the single off the LP, again it’s something completely different sounding like a Bob Seger And The Silver Bullet Band tune! Must’ve been that barroom piano!
The track was their most successful single apparently. From this point on, Teaze take it up another level. ‘Never Again’, the title track ‘On The Loose’, ‘Baby Why Can’t U’ and ‘Lady Killer’ all keep the band at a razor sharp edge, while ‘Nobody’s Fool’ and ‘Tonight It’s Me’ offer something slightly different but still damn exciting.
In Summary
Later in 1978, Teaze headed over to Japan for their legendary 10 day set of gigs, culminating in their ‘Tour Of Japan’ LP. Later, the band would move camp from their home-base of Windsor Ontario to Montreal, and would record two more albums for Aquarius. A fantastic band really, but long-time readers of Glory Daze need no reminder of that fact!
