Background
As a big fan of Swedish band Dynazty, I was quite surprised at how heavy they ended up for this album, in comparison to their previous melodic efforts.
Gone were their comparisons to fellow melodic rockers H.E.A.T, instead Dynazty have moved their tent squarely into full-on heavy progressive metal territory, and I think they sound better than ever as a result!
As a comparison, think Amaranthe but without the female and cookie monster vocals and the staccato/machine gun like rhythm section. Whether the Dynazty fanbase can handle the direction change remains to be seen, but take nothing away from this lot, they are extremely good musicians, no matter what genre they are attempting.
The Songs
There are some absolute behemoth songs on offer here. Just listen to tracks like ‘Run Amok’ and ‘Unholy Deterrent’. Both monster musical experiences.
There are some acoustic intros to ‘Incarnation’ and ‘Salvation’, eventually both kick out of their melodic slumber into something far more fulfilling – a riveting metallic bombast.
‘Dawn Of Your Creation’ has nicked a few ideas from the aforementioned Amaranthe, and that can only be a good thing as I love that band.
You can’t go wrong with other songs like ‘Starlight’, ‘The Northern End’ and the rollicking metal anthem ‘Sunrise In Hell’.
In Summary
As a whole, ‘Renatus’ is a cohesive metal listening experience. However, in saying that, it probably needs to have some identity within the songs.
Despite it being very very good, I couldn’t positively say that certain individual songs were more memorable than others (as in user friendly chorus structures with lyrics to match).
Still, I absolutely love the direction Dynazty are going in, and look forward to their next effort, which I’m sure will be absolutely stellar!
