Cheap Trick Background

These guys have just been voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. Yes, it took that long because these guys have been in operation for years, decades even.

The lads from Rockford Illinois didn’t annoy the suits on the big night. Unlike their contemporary, Steve Miller, who gave the RaR HoF management a huge serve,

Along with their big award, the band turn up to the dance with a brand new album to boot. It’s got a long convoluted name too. Maybe in a few years people won’t remember in which order the names appear.

Even now in April 2016, I can’t even figure out the album title.. ‘Bang Crash Zoom’.. or is it ‘Bang Zoom Crash.. uhh Hello!’

The Songs

‘BZC..H’ is seven years overdue, so what have these guys been doing in the meantime? Keeping it real that’s what.

I’d rather be listening to this than a whole bunch of other meaningless stuff in 2016.

For instance, ‘Heart On The Line’ which opens the CD is as genuine as any Cheap Trick song I’ve heard over their nearly 40 year career.

I love the pulsing bass lines on the second track ‘No Direction Home’. This one comes across as real smooth.

The dreamy quality of ‘When I Wake Up Tomorrow’ makes for compulsory listening. The ambient piano adds a nice touch. A lovely song.

The overtly power pop of ‘Blood Red Lips’ with it’s insistent hand claps takes us back to a few decades ago.

‘Roll Me’ is an energetic number, with guitar bursts to fill out the sound.

‘Long Time No See Ya’ is the out-and-out rocker on the album.

Whereas the Cheap Trick template has been applied liberally to the track ‘The Sun Never Sets’.

In Summary

It’s hard to believe that at least three of these guys are over the sunny side of 60. Daxx Neilsen is still a puppy by comparison, but then again, he is the son of..

This album has been causing a little bit of a stir during the early part of 2016 and quite rightly so.

It’s an energetic affair, and as mentioned previously, the album has coincided with their fortunes at the RaRHOF.

So all power to Cheap Trick, as they thread their way into another decade.
