Background
Originating from the backwops of Alberta Canada, comes the AOR and West Coast demi-god Tim Feehan. His music is pitched primarily at the West Coast/AOR crossover Market. A playground where the likes of Planet 3, Richard Marx and Chicago hang out.
This album was produced by David Foster, who is himself, a bit of a legend in the West Coast scene. This self titled debut from Tim (it’s not really his debut, he had released two albums prior to this..) also features the assistance of two of Foster’s major cohorts, Toto’s Steve Lukather and The Tubes Fee Waybill.
The Songs
You can’t go wrong with West Coast flavoured tunes like the gorgeous ‘Listen For The Heartbeat’ or ‘One Step Away’, both complete with trademark electric piano lines. Tim goes hi-tech on tracks such as ‘Vanna’ and ‘Isolation’ (no, not the Toto version!). The latter wouldn’t be out of place on Chris Eaton‘s album ‘Vision’ for instance.
Upon first listen to ‘Meanstreak’ you’d swear those keyboards were last heard on the debut Allies album. The track rollicks along at good pace, with the saxophone and guitar solo filling it out. As an aside, the opening track ‘Where’s The Fire’ was aired on the brilliant ‘The Wraith’ soundtrack.
In Summary
Tim moved on from this with the equally brilliant ‘Full Contact’ (which was a heavier mainstream release from 1990) and ‘Pray For Rain’ albums. As a consequence, I can easily say that Tim Feehan is one of the genre’s more respected artists, with a brace of quality releases, though he has been relatively quiet of late.
