Background

Here is the first landmark installment of the Nelson brothers Gunnar and Matt, sons of country legend Rick Nelson. Unlike dad, the twins have taken the direct approach to fame and fortune, plying the hard rock road, and combining forces with some of the biggest names in the land.

Onboard include Geffen overlord John Kalodner, songwriting and production talent Marc Tanner, as well as David Thoener, and the musicians themselves.

Brett Garsed had by this stage made his name as the axe-slinger with the rejuvenated Aussie vocal god John Farnham while Bobby Rock had just come off stints with Vinnie Vincent Invasion and Nitro.

At the time of release, this album was like a breath of fresh air, combining all the elements of an essential commercial melodic rock release primed for radio and crossover potential. And to a certain degree the band achieved this, with lots of press, articles, MTV clips, and favourable reviews.

The accoustic and electric guitar layers fill the songs out, while the vocal harmonies are everything you could expect from a family pedigree immersed in music since an early age.

The Songs

Hard rock anthems such as ‘More Than Ever’, and ‘Bits And Pieces’ heavy up the album somewhat. While songs such as ‘Love And Affection’, the title track ‘After The Rain’ and ‘Only Time Will Tell’ give it that commercial appeal, and as such, appeared on radio and video. Other highlights include the rollicking ‘Fill You Up’ and the swanky guitar heavy ‘Will You Love Me’.

In Summary

Still a great listen after all these years, and one of the better releases of what was a pretty good year all round for melodic rock.
