Overall, this Mother’s Finest album is short on songs, just the eight, the total track time a touch over 34 minutes, but that’s how it was back then, the tracks on here are some of their more recognisable from the 70’s, and sits smack dab in the middle lane of funk and hard rock.

Background
We reviewed Mother’s Finest’s 1976 album a couple of years ago. It was their second album, with this one they are now into their third release the following year in 1977, with pretty much the same building blocks as they had for the album the year before including the production team.
Now with Epic Records behind the band, Atlanta’s finest could finally concentrate on making records and supporting them by getting out on the road with all manner of bands on the touring circuit. The band shared the stage with many of the best rockers from the 70’s, and in that regard there was no race divide or gender divide or anything like that. It was just rock and roll all the way!
The Songs
Overall, this album is short on songs, just the eight, the total track time a touch over 34 minutes, but that’s how it was back then. The tracks on here are some of their more recognisable from the 70’s, and sits smack dab in the middle lane of funk and hard rock.
For instance, ‘Piece Of The Rock’ made it into the Billboard singles charts, while the uber funk of ‘Truth’ll Set You Free’ is not some quasi religious workout, far from it! Baby Jean ramps it up on the fit-for-purpose ‘Baby Love’, and then there’s Mike Keck’s swampy synths on ‘Thank You For The Love’. This is definitely the sound of the late 70’s!
Let’s not forget that Mother’s Finest are hard rock heroes in waiting, and with two tracks in particular, ensures this is not a total funk-out jam. ‘Mickey’s Monkey’ opens the album and the guitar quota is up a notch, meanwhile at the tail of the album, ‘Hard Rock Lover’ would’ve been a great track played live to all the masses I bet! Messrs Moses Mo and BB Queen give it some white boy magic on this one.
In Summary
As mentioned, the band toured all over the Eastern USA and even into Canada for this one, supporting the likes of The Who, Aerosmith, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush and fellow Epic label-mates Ted Nugent. The band returned in 1978 with their fourth album ‘Mother Factor’. That’s for another story.
