Background

We take another step closer to completing the discography of Californian band Hurricane. ‘Over The Edge’ is considered to be their first full collective studio album, despite the release of 1985’s Mini LP ‘Take What You Can’.

That was a self released effort initially, then picked up by Enigma after the event. We wrote about that album a some time back. Quite why it took three years for a follow up in the busy mid 80’s era of L.A hair metal is a bit of mystery.

The Songs

Livin’ On The Edge’ opens their account; a windswept vista and some melodic acoustic guitar. Why I am thinking of Jon Bon Jovi and ‘Blaze Of Glory’? It picks up pace and then rides off into sunset like a cowboy and a steel horse.

Next up is an Alice Cooper cover of ‘I’m Eighteen’, not particularly original nor needed on an album like this. ‘I’m Onto You’ is one of the album’s better tracks, even though the music is suitably hairy (as in hair metal) while the lyrics are cornball.

‘Messin’ With A Hurricane’ is not a rehash of the track ‘Hurricane’ from the 1985 LP, no this one is different. ‘Insane’ is caught in a late 80’s groove a la Quiet Riot and Rough Cutt, while ‘We Are Strong’ despite some chugging guitar rhythms and super vocals from Hansen didn’t quite catch on.

However, ‘Give Me An Inch’ happens to be one of the better tracks here, with White Lion styled guitar lines and Lodgic/World Trade vocal choruses. Once you hear it you’ll probably understand where I’m coming from.

Unfortunately, the album closer ‘Baby Snakes’ is a bit of a shocker, what with all the telephone dialling going on. Jeff, take the hint, Jenny doesn’t want to talk to you!

In Summary

The band managed one more album in 1990 called ‘Slave To The Thrill’, which was famous for its cover-art, but after that, Hurricane became a victim of the grunge movement and went out of commission for a decade or more, returning in 2001, disappearing again and returning once more in 2023.
