Background
When it comes to Progressive Metal I have to say it’s not really my cup of tea. I prefer my metal in the straight-forward variety, without the twists and turns that tend to come with Progressive Metal releases. For those who can relate you don’t have to worry where Defyance is concerned. Although you would probably label this quintet as a prog-power metal band they do tend toward the power side.
The Songs
This quintet has been through some rough patches along the way to releasing ‘Time Lost’, but to their credit Defyance have persevered. The final result is a well-balanced album that reminds me of Labyrinth, Crimson Glory, Queensryche and also Fates Warning. Even though the influences sound slightly dated this album definitely is not and it has been given a good boost by its modern crisp and clear production.
In Summary
Throughout ‘Time Lost’ exhibit a tightness and professionalism that defies (no pun intended) their indie status. Definitely a band that deserves greater recognition and exposure.
